The city of Palmerston North in New Zealand has a community choir, known as the Palmerston North Choral Society. It is not an opera company, but in my long period of membership we have been the chorus in Perkel Opera's performance of Nicolai's The Merry Wives of Windsor, and we have given concerts with operatic excerpts in the programme.
In December 2006, the choir presented Handel's Messiah in the magnificent Regent theatre, and this performance was favourably and enthusiastically reviewed by three critics.
