The first thing to is establish the meaning of the title of this comic opera.
Così fan tutte, means literally (in its literal sense) "Thus do all (females)", or idiomatically "All women are like that", or "They all do it". But what is this referring to? Well, the answer could be summed up as La donna è mobile (The lady is fickle, or Women are changeable or There is nothing like a dame for being upwardly and widely mobile). The story is about changing partners, or swapping fiancées.
   There is a subtitle, La scuola degli amanti (The school of lovers): they have a lesson to learn about fidelity, under the direction of a philosopher.
